Nobody wants to be the crew that hit it.
In this trade the whole job is judged on one thing that never happens. Here is exactly how we make sure it does not.
A struck gas main evacuates a neighborhood. Struck fiber can bill out at more per hour than the entire contract is worth. Struck primary electric hurts somebody.
Every one of those starts the same way: somebody assumed they knew what was down there. The work below is what we do instead of assuming.
How we run call-before-you-dig.
Our crew carries Ohio 811 damage-prevention training. The process only protects anybody if it is run properly, so this is how we run it.
01
The ticket goes in first
Ohio law requires notice before mechanized digging, and we file it. Not the afternoon of, and not as a formality after the machine is already on the trailer.
02
We wait out the response
Member utilities get their statutory window to mark. If a facility owner has not responded, we chase it rather than assuming the ground is clear.
03
Marks get verified, not trusted
Paint and flags tell you roughly where. Around anything live or critical we daylight it with the vac truck and put eyes on the actual line before a bit turns.
04
Tickets stay alive for the duration
Marks fade, weather moves them, and tickets expire. On a job that runs long we refresh rather than working off a paint line from three weeks ago.
Qualified through USDI, by discipline.
Operator Qualification is the federal framework for covered tasks on pipeline facilities. Ours are held through USDI, Utility Safety & Design, and they cover the disciplines this company actually performs rather than a single generic card.
The crew also carries OSHA 10. Documentation is available to any owner or general contractor who asks for it.

The safest tool near a live line has no edge on it.
Mechanical excavation is fast and it is unforgiving. A bucket that catches a poly gas service or a fiber duct has already done the damage by the time the operator feels anything.
Water has no edge. It breaks soil apart and stops at the pipe, so the line comes up intact and the hole is only as big as the work needs. That is why we daylight anything questionable with our own vac truck before the drill goes anywhere near it.
